Ghosting Your Way to Irrelevance

Brilliance without dependability turns respect into resentment faster than you think. Ghosting is the modern way to announce you can't be relied upon.

By Grishma Jashapara, Managing Partner at Fusion Associates.

Every time you break your word, miss a deadline without explanation, show up late, or ghost someone you know, you chip away at your reputation.

For you, it may be just another email you ignore, but for the person waiting for your response, the lack of reply becomes part of the impression they form of you. Over time, these small dents add up, and eventually, your reputation becomes so tarnished that people stop expecting anything from you at all. Contrary to what you might think, that's not a liberating place to be - it's a professional and personal dead end.

The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference. When people stop caring about what you do because they've learned not to expect anything from you, you've lost more than their respect; you've lost your relevance. Being the smartest person in the room might earn you momentary admiration, but without dependability, that brilliance is overshadowed by the frustration you cause.

Trust isn’t built on talent alone; it's earned through consistent actions that match your words. Once you're seen as unreliable, people categorise you as untrustworthy, which erodes their willingness to engage with you.

In recruitment, reliability is non-negotiable. If a recruiter has to chase you repeatedly in a process you chose to engage in, they're unlikely to consider you for future opportunities, regardless of your qualifications. Unreliability is a red flag, signalling disorganisation, a lack of respect for others' time, and a careless attitude toward responsibility.

The most inspiring leaders aren't just visionaries or experts; they're dependable. They honour their commitments, respond promptly, and treat everyone with respect - from the CEO to the janitor. This isn't merely good manners; it's smart leadership. Failing to follow through or leaving others hanging erodes trust and damages relationships. Stakeholders and employees are more engaged when they feel respected - and respect starts with the simple act of keeping your word.

No one will thank you for regularly keeping them waiting. Eventually, they’ll stop waiting altogether and move on to more reliable relationships. When that happens, you haven’t just damaged your reputation - you’ve made yourself invisible, a position that limits you both in life and your career.

Show up on time, deliver on your promises, and communicate openly, and you'll earn something far more valuable than fleeting admiration - you'll earn trust. With trust comes opportunities, relationships, and the kind of respect that propels you forward. In a world where connections are currency, and time is invaluable, being dependable sets you apart.

Every commitment you keep strengthens your reputation; every one you break weakens it. Your reputation is built one action at a time so make each one count.
